First seen in the UK in 1995, Daewoo was revolutionary in that it was the first (and only at this time), manufacturer not to use the traditional 'dealer network' to sell their cars.
Somewhat surprisingly the Daewoo company was founded as recently as 1967. In contrast to other motoring giants such as Ford and General Motors this South Korean organisation is still a relative newcomer to the global automobile industry.
Daewoo motor corporation managed to grow so fast and into so many different markets through joint ventures all over the world. Taking advantage of the large workforce in South Korea Daewoo managed to squeeze high levels of production efficiency from its manufacturing plants. Allied to an increasingly liberal government the production of increasingly 'well-made' vehicles led to a fast expanding business.
Unfortunately during the decade 1990-2000 the company began to run into financial difficulties. Heavily leveraged, with virtually all it's major major markets stagnant, Daewoo encountered a lot of unrest, lost sales back home, and in its worldwide markets.
During the last 5-7 years Daewoo has been forced to sell-off it's automotive arm, Daewoo Motors, to General Motors. GM has now moved to re-badge the cars in the UK under the Chevrolet brand. The current line up still includes many established Daewoo Favourite's:
Stylish, easy to manoeuvre and packed with useful features. The Matiz is simple to park, making it an ideal city car. The Daewoo Matiz changed many peoples perceptions of the Korean car giant. Insurance is an almost negligible Group 2.
Largest family car in the line-up comes with an impressive features and options list - 1.8 SE and 2.0 CDX front drive MPV estates with PAS, ABS. SE has twin front airbags, remote central locking, air-con, RDS radio/cassette player.
